Open Microphone: Dr Ali Bacher, Bill Bowden Pavilion
29th February 2016 @ 7.00pm

Ali Bacher Bill

Our first Open Microphone evening of 2016, was held on the 29th February, when Dr Ali Bacher, took time out during some leave to be our guest. The M/C was former Headmaster, Keith Richardson, who did some wonderful research and asked Ali many varied and good questions.

His career as an administrator, is well known, but he spoke about many behind the scenes meetings, to bring unification to Cricket in the country, very much like our previous guest, Tommy Bedford had done for rugby at the same time.

Dr Bacher is a very humble and compassionate man, and it was summed up so well in the end, by Keith, who thanked him for what he had done for cricket and the country. Our thanks again to everybody who attended, and to remind everybody, that these evenings are accessible, to everybody, and we hope to see continued support for Open Microphone evenings.

Open Microphone: Tommy Bedford, Bill Bowden Pavilion 25th November 2015 @ 7.00pm

Tommy Bedford
The last Open Microphone evening of the year was held 2 days after Hugh Bladen, when former Natal legend, Springbok captain, anti-apartheid campaigner, Tommy Bedford, joined us for an evening, during his holiday in Cape town, from London, where he has lived for 25 years.

A lot of the guys in attendance were first time visitors to Open Microphone, including former players who were team mates of his, namely HO De Villiers, Mannetjies Roux, Derek Van Den Berg and Dave Stewart, who all played International rugby with him.

Many who attended commented that it was a profound evening, as the still very fit and athletic Tommy told about his playing days as a Natalian in the old South Africa and his part in bringing about change in the country, by uniting the 2 rugby boards and meeting, the banned ANC in exile, which personally cost him a lot, in losses of his business dealings as an Architect and personal liberty.

A highly articulate man, who speaks from his heart and says it like it is, he told us many things of our history that we did not know, and he holds the record as being our longest speaking guest, as he enthralled everybody with his story, and was asked to carry on by everybody present. It was a fascinating evening, with a different take on most subjects that he spoke about and a rare chance to hear him.

As usual, our thanks to MEDAC for the prizes, our M/C, rugby writer, Gavin Rich, who watched Tommy as a 10 year old boy, and read his newspaper writings, which decided Gavin to become a rugby journalist and also to Tommy who took the time out from his annual visit to enthral and captivate us, it was indeed a profound evening, to use the words of many present at the evening.

Thanks to all our supporters, M/C's and sponsors who make these evenings so great and we look forward to seeing you all again next year, details to follow.

Open Microphone: Hugh Bladen, Bill Bowden Pavilion 23rd November 2015 @ 7.00pm

Hugh Bladen
The second last meeting of the year was the legend of rugby commentary in the country, was on hand, to talk to us about his career as a player and broadcaster. The bonus was that we had him do some ad lib commentary , finishing off with... 'UNBEAVIABLE', his standard trade mark , by which everybody knows him.

A great story teller with an fantastic memory for detail , he told us of many test matches and facts, interspersed with his great sense of humour.

Everybody was entertained as he rolled off all his highlights and low points of his career.

As usual , thanks to our M/C Tank Lanning who does such good preparation and keeps the evening going and to MEDAC, The sports bracing company, who provided us with lucky draw prizes., and to our loyal audience, who always support us and help to make the evenings as enjoyable, as they are.

A tribute to Pat Simons by Rowan Algie

Wynberg Old Boys' around the world mourn the passing of a legend. Pat Simons, class of 1953, on the morning of the 16th April 2015. Pat, past President of the Wynberg Old Boys' Union in 85-86 and 91-92, Drum Major, was instrumental in having the Bill Bowden Pavilion built. Our thoughts and condolences are with the Simons Family from the Wynberg Old Boys' Union Committee.

Open Microphone: Demetri Catrakilis and Nic Groom, Bill Bowden Pavilion 17th June 2015

Demetri Catrakilis

The latest Open Microphone that was held at the Bill Bowden Pavilion, was the first time, we had 2 current Stormers players as our guests. The two halfbacks, Nic Groom and Demetri Catrakilis, were in conversation, with Wynberg Old Boys, Howard Kahn, who is the Communications Manager of Stormers Rugby and a first for him as well, in the M/C role.

Howard got them to tell us about how they train, the amount of kicking practice that Dimitra does, which is about an hour and a half each day, what they eat and how they relax in between games.

A couple of little known facts were revealed, namely that Nic, a Rondebosch Old Boy , managed to get a degree amongst being a professional rugby player, on limited time, and that Demetri was actually a highly rated soccer player who was offered a contract to play for one of the PSL clubs. He however, decided after playing rugby at St Johns in Johannesburg, that his future lay with rugby, but he believes firmly, that playing soccer first, made him the goal kicker, that he is to day, both out of hand and as a place kicker.

It was a great evening, as we heard something different from 2 young men, who spoke with humility and honesty. As usual, we were helped by our sponsors, Medac, who gave generous gift vouchers to our guests and also to Mantelli's Biscuits who gave us some lovely spot prizes. Thank you to Howard Kahn for donating tickets to the next Currie Cup game at Newlands.

Thanks as always to our guests who give of their free time and our loyal audience, who enjoyed a great evening.

Open Microphone: Kyle Brown - Bill Bowden Pavilion 22nd April 2015

Kyle Brown

A small but very appreciative audience, were captivated by the presence of the Blitzbokke sevens Captain, Kyle Brown. Kyle was schooled at SACS, as our first guest from the Sevens code, provided us with a rare insight into the game of Sevens, which is totally different to the 15 Man game. He especially came through from the BLITZBOKKE TRAINING CAMP Stellenbosch to join us. His presence was very topical, as our National team head to World Standings, with 2 games to go, in the next 3 weeks.

We learnt about the importance of team culture, and the family environment. We were also told about the various countries that play, how they play and we were also given a quick tour of the Sevens circuit, as Kyle explained about the various countries that they play in.

Altogether, a fascinating evening, held together by the M/C, Old Boy, Brad Bing from Sporting Chance, who asked some wonderful questions. Thanks to our sponsors, MEDAC, who gave all those who attended a little gift? Also thanks to Kyle who brought us a BLITZBOKKE jersey and a beautiful official BOMBER short sleeve jacket , which Kyle was able to sign for the winners, this is the first time our guest, supplied some prizes. We also received 2 beautiful SA Rugby Annuals from JJ Harmse at SA Rugby.

Thanks as always to our generous sponsors, who make the evening possible, and as always to our guests, who do it all for the love of the game and the school.

A First - Wynberg vs Rondebosch Soccer Matches - 18 April 2015

Wynberg v Rondebosch Soccer Matches

History was made at Wynberg Boys High on 18 April 2015, when two soccer games, featuring Wynberg and Rondebosch under 17 and under 19 soccer sides played each other. (Wynberg first played soccer in the then inter-schools league in 1909).

The tossing of the coin by the referee meant that the captain of Rondebosch under 17, Ashley Moir, and of Wynberg, Timothy Harris, started the game, that was eventually won by Rondebosch 5-3, and at the same time, kicked off this historic day. It was a milestone, as this was the first time that Wynberg had played Rondebosch in all three winter sports over the same weekend, namely rugby, hockey and soccer.

The game was played at Oude Wijnberg, or the bottom field, below the Jacques Kallis Cricket Oval. This is situated next to the school's first vineyard, the vines having been planted in 2010 with their maiden harvest taking place in 2013. We will be releasing for sale this year, the Oude Wijnberg Shiraz 2013, this limited-edition wine produced by expert Wynberg Old Boy winemakers has been bottled as part of the 175th year commemoration and will doubtless be highly sought after.

Against this beautiful backdrop, Oude Wijnberg has been turned into a permanent soccer pitch, with plans to add seating and stands. It is arguably the most beautiful field on the campus. Rather fitting that it hosted this historic moment, as the two schools, played a high quality soccer game.

Both schools started as soccer-playing schools before switching across to rugby, so it was a return to their roots on this day, which was also blessed with great weather. After the under 17's had completed their match, it was left to the under 19's to finish the day with an entertaining 0-0 draw.

The U19 Soccer Team

We look forward to this becoming an annual fixture, just like rugby and hockey, and the attached photo will be a reminder of that day when it all started.

Congratulations to all the players, teachers, coaches and everybody else who worked so hard to put the event together.

Summer Sport

Summer Sport 4th March 2015

Summer Sport, this year, was played in beautiful summer weather. There were four cricket sides, three waterpolo sides, two tennis sides and one basketball side playing against the school teams.

All of the games were played in good spirit and results were not discussed afterwards but doughnuts and hamburgers were enjoyed by all.

Thank you to all who helped make the day enjoyable, to Gary and his 3B Café staff, not forgetting Thelma and her ladies, well done. A big thank you to Mickey Lumb for once again taking the photos. Lastly, thank you to the school boy mom's for serving the cricket teas.

Gert Small

Open Microphone: Gert Smal 10th February 2015

The first meeting of 2015, saw the Director of Stormers Rugby, Gert Smal in conversation with Gavin Rich. The meeting was held in the week before the Stormers and Super Rugby kicked off the season. Gert, a very modest and quietly spoken man, has a vast rugby CV, including Assistant Coach to 6 nations winners, Ireland, and one of Jake Whites assistants, in the 2007, World Cup winning side. Gert spoke about his overseas experience, the different approach to the game from the Northern Hemisphere teams, and about his vision for rugby in the Cape, including school boy rugby and junior level.

Questions from the floor, expressed the appreciative audiences view that things at WP Rugby can only get better. We can see from the Stormers results so far, in Super Rugby that this is the indeed happening. Our thanks as usual to Old Boy, Howard Kahn of WP rugby, for the lucky draw prizes of rugby tickets and once again, Old Boy Andre Badenhorst of , AA Badenhorst Family Wines for the superb gift packs for Gert and Gavin. We also welcome as a first time sponsor, Mantelli's Biscuits who donated 2 lovely gift packs of their famous biscuits.

Without our sponsors, and ever loyal audience, we are unable to have these evenings, so thank you to all concerned.

Changes at The Home Of The Wynberg Old Boys (THE BILL BOWDEN PAVILION (BBP))

The BBP is a major revenue earner for the WOBU with our only other sources of revenue being the Matric subscriptions, WOB Squash Club, the OB dinner, various other small events and donations. The BBP also serves as a central meeting place for Old Boys, a dedicated facility for Old Boys events, an on campus facility for school events (meetings, house braais etc) and a meeting place for parents, teachers and members of the broader Wynberg family.

In 2012 the WOBU refurbished the BBP at a cost of R 323,000 with the coffee bar being added early in 2014. The result is a venue that is the envy of all other schools and Old Boys Unions. But there were two challenges faced by the committee, how do we truly transform the BBP into a venue which welcomes all Old Boys, parents (including moms), teachers and visitors and how do we ensure the maximum profitability of the venue. BBP revenues over the last three years had flat-lined while operating costs had steadily increased.

In June the committee resolved unanimously to reduce the alcohol emphasis and transform the venue over the next 12 months with a "coffee and bar" theme. In addition, the control and management would be outsourced with the goal of increasing profitability, reducing committee time in the management of the facility while at the same time serving the needs of the users of the venue. Glenda Martindale who managed the BBP for the last seven years was retrenched (the month long process culminated in a signed agreement with her on Thursday 28th August) and Gary Blakey has been provisionally contracted to operate the BBP facility.

Old Boys' Dinner 2014

Fritz Johl

The 2014 Annual Dinner was once again very successful. The evening went off well from the welcome at the front door, superb décor and an excellent menu. The atmosphere could not have been better and was matched by eager conversation amongst the old boys - many of whom travelled from far and wide for the annual event.

Our guest speaker, Steve Doidge(1990), gave a most humorous speech, detailing all the teachers over a long period of time, who were known for their strange habits, or nicknames, how they got to be known by those names and how they all were part of the legends that make the school the place of education that it is. Steve tied it all up, by pointing out how important it was to be part of a school like Wynberg, where the important aspects of school life are tied in to the ethos of the tradition and culture of Wynberg that we all know, understand and are part of.

Who can forget teachers like "the arrow from Parow", Shorty Lennox, Plug Louw, Philip Kriel, Ray Connellan and so many more.MC, Arno Erasmus (1978), kept the guys exceptionally quiet with some witty quips of his own.

The 175 flag was piped in by Hugh Veitch, brother of Neil Veitch, the Curator of the WBHS Museum and carried by 2014 Head Boy Raydhaan Addinall and Mark Timlin, Head Boy in 2013. The flag was presented to current Wynberg Old Boys' Union President and MC on the night, Arno Erasmus

Old Boys' Gauteng Dinner 2014

The attendance at the 2014 Gauteng Old Boy's dinner was a little disappointing this year but it did not dampen the true Wynberg School spirit that came through. This year's the function was held in the wine cellar at Browns of Rivonia which can only give a great atmosphere to the dinner as we all attended a school with vineyards all around.

As Keith Richardson spoke, I am sure all who listened were filled with pride, as our school just seems to go from strength to strength. It was also a privilege to have the 175 celebration flag with us before it makes its way to various destinations beyond our borders. After Mickey Lumb had told us what's happening with the Old Boy's Union, Johan le Roux (ex- Springbok rugby player) related to South African rugby past and present, throwing in a few of the antics he and a few of the others players, the likes of James Dalton, got up to. His talk seem to end in a debate about our present team and that with all the old players in it, we would never beat the All Blacks. I guess we can all eat our words! To date we have had two of the four Springboks who were red carded since returning to international rugby. A few years back Jannes Labuschagne spoke to us.

We had generous donations from Douglas and Brendon Bain and Alan Williams which enabled us to have a raffle where prizes were handed out from car products, bottles of alcohol, rounds of golf, dinner vouchers to a weekend away.

Old Boys' Gauteng Dinner 2014Our oldest old boy was Roger McCleery (1953), a position held by Mackie Brodie (1941) for many years who sadly passed away recently. The youngest was Kieran Burke (1999).

Thanks goes to Johan le Roux for spending the evening with us, to Keith Richardson and Mickey Lumb coming all the way from Cape Town to be with us, to Doulas and Brendon Bain as well as to Alan Williams for their generous donations, to Deon Poggenpoel and the staff at Browns of Rivonia for the facility, meal and service and to Hugh Rowles and Ted Coffin for coordinating and pulling everything together.

Calling all Gauteng Old Boys' who did not get an email invite to the Dinner - Please send your email details to Hugh Rowles on hrowles@wbhs.org.za or phone the office on 021-7972101

Open Microphone: Jurie Roux Bill Bowden Pavilion 21st October 2014

Jurie Roux
Open Microphone was very honoured to have Jurie Roux, the CEO of SA Rugby as our guest on 21 October.

We have had many fine speakers through the years, but nobody spoke with so much honesty, insight and Knowledge as Jurie. Running rugby in South Africa is a very difficult job, but everybody who attended, left the evening, knowing that our rugby is in the best of hands. Jurie has business, law and accountancy qualifications so can look at every thing from so many viewpoints, and he gave us a very seldom heard insight into what happens at SA Rugby, and at International level, where he also serves on many Boards and the World Cup Committee.

We are very grateful to Tank Lanning, who always does his research with the best questions, and also to the Springbok Experience Rugby Museum, who allowed us to give away some tickets to visit the Waterfront, and see the history of SA Rugby for themselves.

Our thanks go to Justin Smit from RGBC, who supplied the gifts of Famous Grouse for our guests.

Andrew Paterson, Keith Andrews & Christian Stewart Bill Bowden Pavilion
For the first time ever, had 3 legends from Western Province, amateur rugby days, Andrew Paterson, Keith Andrews and Christian Stewart, who between them played more than 300 games between them.

They all entertained us in a highly humorous way, with stories of long tours, playing rugby on Saturdays and partying with the opposition until the next day. They shared their thoughts on the modern game, the lack of ball handling skills and what rugby should do, to better itself. It was a different evening, as they all reminded each other of events and shared the same stories, all in a different way. We thank our M/C , Tank Lanning, for his work that he puts in to make these evenings so great, and thank our sponsor, Andre Badenhorst class of1963, for his very generous donation of gifts.

As usual, thank you to our ladies under Thelma Rowles who provided the wonderful supper and to Glenda and her staff for running the bar.

Open Microphone: Corne Krige 8th May 2014

The man voted the best Captain on the Survivor TV series and winning R500 000, was our guest on 8th May, at OPEN MICROPHONE. Corne Krige told us about how tough the 28 day event was, where he had no food for days, and how he came to appreciate the simple things in life, like a regular meal, and a place to sleep and shower, as he lived on the island , like everybody else.

Corne obviousy also told us about his career as a player, the high points and low points, his involvement in Kamp Staaldraad, and his views on what needs to happen at Stormers rugby, in order to get it right.

As usual Gavin Rih did the M/C function, and with his knowledge and experience was able to get Corne to cover all the important subjects of rugby. Our thanks to Justin Smit from RGBC, who supplied the spot prizes of Famous Grouse to our guests and lucky draw prizes, and to Howard Kahn from WP Rugby, who gave us rugby tickets. Both are Old Boys of the school, and we appreciate their generosity.

Pieter de Villiers

Open Microphone: Pieter de Villiers 13th February 2014

OPEN MICROPHONE celebrated its 25th meeting, when ex French Prop and now the Springbok scrum coach, Pieter De Villiers joined us , for the evening, together with Tank Lanning, who provided the questions as the MC. An interesting evening, to say the least, with Pieter, sharing his vast knowledge with us, as regards the art of scrumming. Describing himself as a mechanic of the scrum. He provided us with a very rare insight of what happens with the front rows, the plans he has for the Springboks, and about his career in France, where he arrived as a Afrikaner, and left 14 years later, with a French lady as his wife.

Pieter spoke about playing "FROM THE HEART", but indeed he spoke and shared with us from his "HEART'. A wonderful evening, as indeed all our guests have provided. They all give of their free time, to share the knowledge they have, but always give us lessons in life, and all remain humble and for that we thank them.

As usual, our ladies under Thelma Rowles provided the wonderful supper, and thanks again to John Bos, (1978) from Croydon Wines who provided the prizes, and to old boy Howard Kahn(1996) from Western Province Rugby, who also provided some tickets as lucky draw prizes.

Open Microphone: Graeme Smith - 16th September 2013

Wynberg Old Boys and Open Microphone were very honoured to have the most successful cricket captain of all time, and our beloved Proteas skipper, Graeme Smith, who spoke to about 110 guys, on a cold Monday 16 September evening. The M/C was Old Boy Brad Bing (1981), founder of the Sporting Chance Organization, and a true lover of the game.

Graeme in a very informative way spoke of his school days , at King Edward, where the culture and ethos is very similar to Wynberg. He covered all the highlights of his career, the low points as well, and finished off the evening telling us about his future plans and ideas. The evening finished off with some good quality questions from the floor, which he answered truthfully and showed that a leader is seen by what he does and says.

A BIG thank you to Paul Barichievy for once again organising these top quality speakers and to Thelma Rowles and her ladies committee for providing the usual top quality snacks and not forgetting Glenda Martindale and her staff behind the bar.

We would also like to thank Adidas for the lovely bag they supplied as a spot prize, as well as Howard Khan(1996) from Western Province rugby, who gave us rugby tickets, and to Justin Smit(2003), the Brand Manager of Famous Grouse, who gave of his product, which were given away as lucky number prizes.

Once again, OPEN MICROPHONE, was fortunate to have another top quality guest as speaker, Bob Skinstad on 9 April. Bob is very articulate, with great knowledge of many things, besides rugby. He told some delightful stories, including how he started his commentary career, with SKY TV in the UK. He was made to start at the bottom by serving the studio guests, including Sean Fitzpatrick, sandwiches, so that he could learn everything about broadcasting.

This would be one of the reasons why he is such a good commentator on Super sport, as he has done almost every job there is, relating to getting the product on air.

The M/C was our old friend, Tank Lanning, who asked Bob all the right questions, and the two provided us with much laughter, and thought provoking ideas on life and rugby. We had 100 guys in attendance, who enjoyed the evening, and always provide good questions to our guests. Our thanks as alwys to our team of ladies under Thelma Rowles, who provide us with such lovely snacks. Also a big thank you, once again, to OLD BOY, John Bos (1978) from Croydon Estates who provided the lucky draw prizes, and gifts for our guests, without them, our evenings would not be able to happen.

Summer Sport - 6th March 2013

Summer Sport 2013

This year Summer Sport attracted four cricket sides, three Waterpolo sides, two tennis sides and one basketball side playing against the school teams. Few things revive the Wynberg spirit like the enjoyment of getting back onto the school field with Old Boys to take on the young talent of our current boys at the school.

The results were not discussed afterwards but doughnuts and boerie rolls were enjoyed by all. The banter between Old Boys' and School Boys went on for a considerable time. We have captured a few photos below. Thank you to all who helped make the day enjoyable, to Glenda, Tim, Will and Thelma, well done. Thank you to the school boy mom's for supplying the cricket teas. Open Microphone: Peter Kirsten
Bill Bowden Pavilion - 13th February 2013

Peter and Colin
The first OPEN MICROPHONE of the year was held on a lovely summers evening, featuring Peter Kirsten, who is well known to many old boys of that era as an outstanding rugby and cricket player, while still at SACS, and then for many years as a fine batsman Peter played in both eras, as an amateur, where he had to work for a living, and then later as a professional with DERBYSHIRE. He spoke about his career, and what it was like to have played both sports at a time when you could. He is now a commentator with SABC on cricket, so has a good insight into the modern game.

The MC was Colin Bryden, a walking encyclopaedia on all things cricket, and a man who was with Peter through out his career, and was able to ask the right questions.

We want to thank both these gentlemen, who gave up of there valuable time to be with us, and provided us with a relaxed, informed and humorous evening.

Thanks to Bill Brown of Cape Photo for the photos and Llew Byrne of Really Great Brand Company for the gifts and prizes and Howard Kahn of WP Rugby (Pty) Ltd for additional lucky number prizes. A big thank you to Paul Barichievy for once again organising these top quality speakers and to Thelma Rowles and her ladies committee for providing the usual top quality snacks. View more photos

Welcome to our new President Arno Erasmus (1978)

The Old Boys' Union welcomes Arno Erasmus (1978) as the new President. Arno will take over from Steve Doidge (1990) who will remain on the committee as a member.

It is opportune to thank Steve for his passionate and tireless dedication to the union over the past two years. Steve has also fostered a strong relationship between the Union and the school and we know that Arno will follow this through. Steve's parting words on facebook - "Arno - good luck! We are in great hands."

We know that Arno's role will be an exciting one, as not only is he the new President of the Union but he will also continue in the role of Treasurer.

Arno runs a very successful accounting business ASA Accountants Inc.
He is married to Lorraine and has two wonderful children Danielle 19 years and Dean 17 years.

We the committee wish Arno all the best

Jacques Kallis 1993

The Wynberg Old Boys' Union Committee congratulates Jacques on his achievement as SA Cricketer of the Year for the second time. Below are excerpts from a Sport 24 article.

"Jacques Kallis was crowned as South Africa's Cricketer of the Year at the 2011 South African Cricket Awards Gala Dinner on Tuesday at Gallagher Estate in Midrand. It is the second time that Kallis has won CSA's premier award as he previously achieved the distinction in 2004. He achieved a hat trick of awards this time as he was also named Castle Test Cricketer of the Year and received the KFC "So Good Award!" for his centuries in both innings of the Test match against India at Sahara Park Newlands in spite of being handicapped by a painful side injury."

Wynberg Heritage, Celebrating our Links

Wynberg Boys’ High cyclists will take part in the first 50 km stage of the 2011 Unogwaja. Daily video diary updates will be blogged via www.RedSockFriday.com and pinkdrive.co.za

90 years ago Wynberg Old Boy, Vic Clapham’s dream of a marathon between “Maritzburg and Durban as a living memorial to the spirit of the soldiers of the Great War was realised: the Comrades Marathon was born.

In 1933, another Wynberg Old Boy, Phil Masterton-Smth, nick-named ”Unogwaja” (the Hare) who, short of the reail fare between Cape Town and Durban, wrote himself into the Legends of the Comrades by cycling 1730 km to the starting line ... and finishing 10th overall.

This ultimate story of one man’s passion, will power and triumph is why the Unogwaja 2011 was created:

Wynberg hockey coach John McInroy, along with Paul Blake, WP van Zyl and Lourens van Zyl will follow the footsteps of Masterton-Smith and attempt the ultimate journey of courage and endurance by cycling from Cape Town to Pietermaritzburg and the following day running the Comrades Marathon.

Alfred John Adriaan Morris

Alfred John Adriaan Morris -
(1923 - 2010)

Wynberg Old Boys' mourn the passing of Alf Morris, who made a significant contribution over many years to the lives of so many Wynberg boys in nurturing their academic and sporting development. He continued his strong active support of the School and the Old Boys' Union after his retirement.

We will remember him always with great respect and affection and extend our deepest sympathy to Helena and family on their sad loss.

Carole England moving to Ausie

Carole England who for many years administered the Old Boys Union has been persuaded by her son's Wayne and Gary to join them in Sydney, Australia. Carole left on the 31st March.

Carole, whose late husband Chris (56) was a former President of the Union, was honoured with Honorary Life Membership of the Union for the great effort she put into Union affairs. The England family are the only family in the Union to all be Life Members. Both Wayne and Gary emigrated a few years back.

We trust Carole's move to her family will be happy as we know she leaves many close friends behind.

We wish her well in her new home and thank her for all her hard work, support and direction she gave the Union.

We trust that once she has settled in to her new home in Sydney we can get our Australian Branch up and running as we have many old boys' down under.

Mickey Lumb - Vice President Wynberg Old Boys' Union.

Jacques Kallis Oval - 26 November 2009

Jacques Kallis Oval Jacques Kallis (93) was honoured by the school when the cricket oval was renamed the 'Jacques Kallis Oval". Jacques says he is "delighted" to be honoured by his school for his contribution to the game of cricket, "it is a very humbling experience and I feel very proud". The idea of renaming the cricket oval was initiated by the RCL last year and after Jacques went past 10000 runs in test cricket the school decided to go ahead with the idea.

Jacques is now one of the world's leading all-rounders and among the top 10 highest scoring batsmen.

The unveiling of the 'Jacques Kallis Oval" plaque took place during the 20/20 game between the Jacques Kallis XI, led by old boy Aubrey Martyn and also included two other Proteas players, Dave Rundle and Paul Adams and the school's 1st XI. The plaque was crafted by Old Boy, Mike Smit (73) and donated by the Old Boys' Union.

Mendel Kaplan

Mendel Kaplan

It is with a sense of shock and deep sadness that we heard of the passing of Mendel Kaplan in Cape Town on Thursday, 19 November. Mendel was a great benefactor and loyal supporter of the School and Old Boys' Union. His interest in the School's achievements throughout the years has really been appreciated by all.

The upgrading of Silverhurst, now Kaplan House, the building of the Bill Bowden Pavilion and the re-siting and refurbishing of the Eric Tasker and Wynberg Heritage Museums in Kaplan House bear testimony to his generosity and ongoing interest. They are a living memorial.

The Union offers its deepest sympathy to his wife Jill and the whole Kaplan family. He will be sorely missed.
